July 23, 2026 — Artificial intelligence has become one of the biggest strategic priorities for business leaders worldwide. Yet despite record levels of investment, executives remain sharply divided over one fundamental question: Are organizations spending too much on AI—or not enough?
New global research from Clearwater Analytics reveals a growing leadership challenge facing the asset management industry. While firms continue increasing AI budgets at an unprecedented pace, many executives remain uncertain whether their investment strategies are delivering sustainable business value.
AI Spending Continues to Accelerate
The study shows that AI investment has become a top strategic priority across the financial services sector.
Over the past 12 months:
- 63% of firms increased AI budgets by more than 50%.
- 13% more than doubled their AI investment.
- No surveyed organization reported reducing its AI budget.
- Only 4% kept spending unchanged.
Despite this momentum, confidence in investment decisions remains divided. While 25% of fund managers believe their organizations are still under-investing in AI, 66% worry their companies may already be spending too much.
The findings highlight that the challenge has shifted from deciding whether to invest in AI to determining how much investment is truly required to remain competitive.
AI Has Become a Strategic Business Capability
The research also suggests that AI adoption within asset management is far more advanced than many assume.
More than half (56%) of respondents began implementing AI between four and five years ago, while another 34% started two to three years ago. Only 9% have introduced AI within the last year.
Rather than experimenting with pilot projects, firms are increasingly embedding AI into core business operations.
Today, AI is being used across investment decision-making, portfolio analysis, risk management, compliance, operational workflows, and data management, making it an integral part of modern financial institutions.
Leadership Challenge: Value Over Spending
For executives, the research highlights that increasing AI budgets alone is unlikely to guarantee better business performance.
The real competitive advantage comes from building the right governance frameworks, improving data quality, developing employee capabilities, and integrating AI into everyday business processes.
Organizations that successfully institutionalize AI—rather than simply increasing expenditure—are expected to achieve stronger operational efficiency, better investment decisions, and long-term competitive advantages.
From Technology Investment to Business Strategy
According to Clearwater Analytics, the next phase of AI adoption will be defined less by the size of technology budgets and more by leadership’s ability to deploy AI responsibly and measure tangible business outcomes.
Companies that align AI investments with strategic objectives, operational excellence, and measurable return on investment are expected to outperform those pursuing AI simply because competitors are doing the same.
As artificial intelligence continues reshaping global financial services, executives are increasingly discovering that successful AI transformation is not about spending the most—it is about investing the smartest.
